About Us
On January 16, 2025, the Vistra Battery Energy Storage System (B.E.S.S.) fire at the Moss Landing power facility burned. This was the largest such facility in the world. The fire burned over 4,500,000 batteries, emitting upwards of 5,000 tons of Cobalt, Nickel, Lithium and Manganese into our environment. PVCs, PFASs and other toxins were also emitted in a plume that spread over thousands of acres and was inhaled by tens of thousands of residents. Thousands have gotten sick… hundreds seriously so. Harmful acids have permeated the region’s air. Our environment has been despoiled.
Our scientifically validated sampling (see below) shows surface residue increases from less than 5 parts per billion (ppb) to as high as 690ppb. This is a mass-casualty event. And yet, with all the other goings on in our world, many remain unaware of this.
This website is designed to provide information and keep you informed. Thank you for caring about this incredibly consequential and needless disaster. Please read on to learn more, get connected, and assist us in our ongoing volunteer efforts.

Timeline of Events
Fire Duration
- A major fire ignites inside Vistra’s 300 MW lithium-ion battery energy storage facility (“Moss Landing 300”), containing ~100,000 modules. The fire at Vistra’s 300 MW lithium-ion battery facility burns from Jan 16 through Jan 22, longer than initial reports suggested.
- North Monterey County Fire opts to let the batteries burn out due to lithium fire hazards.
- Evacuation of 1,200–1,500 residents; Highway 1 closed.
- EPA Region 9 begins emergency air monitoring with 9 perimeter stations.
Community Meeting - Facilitation of Concerns
- The Commuunity gathers at the Prunedale Grange to express fears and ask questions

Independent Findings
-
Dr. Aiello (San Jose State) detects high levels of cobalt, manganese, and nickel in Elkhorn Slough samples.
Red-Tag Event
-
NAML red-tags the CPUC-approved site, signaling community concerns about safety and oversight.
Early Analysis of NAML Samples
Hunterbrook review of NAML’s wipe samples finds:
- Nickel & cobalt concentrations 34× average, up to 180× background near Moss Landing.
- Manganese ~12× higher; lithium ~3× higher.
- UCSC toxicologist warns these metals can cause respiratory, neurological, and carcinogenic effects.
Hotspot Flare-up
- Damaged batteries smolder; EPA takes over lead cleanup oversight at CalEPA’s request.
Community Health Survey Launches
-
Monterey & Santa Cruz County Health Departments open online survey for residents to report symptoms.
Battery Rack De-Linking Completed
