Coastal Commission Notes

NAML spoke as many with one voice at the monthly California Coastal Commission (CCC) hearing in Santa Cruz.  Our volunteers were out in the rain on Thursday and inside speaking on both Wednesday and Thursday.  We presented all the ways that B.E.S.S. facilities are a danger to environment and life.  The lack of industry oversight.  The flaws in design and maintenance of the plant and the terrible impacts upon our community.  While the CCC was not directly responsible for the B.E.S.S. installation and opening, we did ask that they assert authority to require increased oversight and resources prior to the issuance of a new operations permit.  We also met with CCC scientific staff to press the case regarding additional requirements of VISTRA and we made clear our belief that such requirements would be useful to communities around the world who are watching how our government agencies hold private sector plant operators accountable for best practices in the wake of this disaster.
