Moss Landing was down to just 1 GW of capacity when Vistra Energy took over the struggling facility in early 2018. Given its existing connections to California’s grid and the state’s green energy ambitions, Vistra decided to reinvigorate the site by adding a cutting-edge battery storage facility and eventually built out a combined 750 megawatts (MW) / 3,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) of batteries in three separate phases. When the third phase was completed in May of 2023, Moss Landing became the largest operational battery storage system in the world.
